Getting in and out of it is easier, too. Yet it gives up nothing in passenger and cargo space. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design.  the edge is not small. All of these vehicles are larger than they look, a result of their slippery styling.  we found the edge roomy and comfortable with fully foldable seats for big cargo carrying. The reason is that it has a wide track and a long wheelbase with short overhangs. The edge is eight inches shorter in overall length than the ford explorer yet its wheelbase is just two inches shorter. This means that, in relation to the explorer and speaking proportionately, the edge has it tires pushed farther outward, closer to the corners, both in length and width, which gives it a wider and longer stance on the road. (the track is the distance between the left and right wheels. The long wheelbase and wide track are not just about looks; they make for a more stable vehicle because the majority of the mass is inside the wheels. Visually, this aggressive stance makes the edge stand apart from the relatively tippy look of traditional suvs.  the edge features ford's bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan.  despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like tailgates found on many suvs. We found the rear design to be a cross between a lexus rx and a bmw x3, which cannot be a bad thing.  the vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof, providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a foot-wide panel between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorthe edge combines a stylish, comfortable interior with lots of cargo-hauling utility.  front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. Two decent cupholders reside alongside the substantial shifter. The center stack is angled outward to make it easy to reach the large knobs for the climate and entertainment controls.  the ford sync communications and entertainment system can be controlled via voice commands or dashboard buttons. It can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players (it will charge an ipod). To issue a voice command, the driver hits a steering wheel button and speaks the command. Occupants can tell the system to play a specific artist, album or track stored on an mp3 player. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier thanks to rear wheels that are placed well back and thus allow for less intrusion from the wheel wells.  cargo carrying is an area where the edge excels. The tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. With the rear seats in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room, but pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to open up 69. 0 cubic feet of storage space on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. The rear seatback splits 60/40 for increased versatility and the back reclines several degrees on all models for improved rear-seat comfort. driving impressionunderway, the ford edge handles reasonably well, given its considerable size and weight. Five models of the 2012 camry range from the stripped-down l to the sport-tuned se to the hybrid.  new for 2012, the camry hasn't changed its size, as the wheelbase, length, track and height are within fractions of an inch of those of the sixth-generation 2011 model. But the sheetmetal is totally new, and a new roofline makes it slightly more slippery. The 2012 camry's lines are attractive, and it's clearly more contemporary than the 2011. What toyota calls aero-corner design enhances this image. Interior dimensions stay the same within fractions of those of the previous version. There's a bit more backseat legroom, and some interior parts have been thinned to create more eye, knee and elbow room. The instrument panel is pretty and functional, storage spaces well thought-out, and a 60/40 split rear seat is standard. A new leather dashboard is neat and stylish.  for powertrains, the standard i4 and optional v6 engines are carryovers from 2010 and 2011, respectively. Six-speed automatic transmissions are standard. The standard 2. 5-liter i4 has double vvt-i technology, making 178 horsepower. The 3. 5-liter v6 produces 268 horsepower. It reflects ongoing research in impact energy management.  the tuned suspension in the camry se might be too firm for some; we didn't find the se uncomfortable, but we did find the softer camry xle more relaxing around town. We preferred the se's tighter steering in all circumstances.  the camry hybrid uses a new 2. 5-liter atkinson cycle engine, with more horsepower and electric power than before. It feels like a totally different car than the i4 or v6, as it slows everything down and makes the vehicle feel bigger. The 2012 camry hybrid le is rated by the government at 43/39 mpg, camry hybrid xlt at 40/38 mpg. lineupthe 2012 toyota camry comes in five models. But the sheetmetal is 100 percent new, and a new roofline makes it slightly more slippery, at 0. 27 cd vs. It's quite attractive for a vanilla car, with clean sides and nice edges, with no lumpy cladding or gratuitous chrome. Indeed it has lost weight, 150 pounds (220 pounds for the hybrid). It might all be under the skin, but no matter, it's all good. What toyota calls aero-corner design enhances this image. Hips and shoulders tucked in.  the camry le uses wheelcovers over 16-inch steel wheels, the camry xle uses 17-inch alloy wheels, and the camry se uses 17- or 18-inchers. All three styles successfully avoid cookie cutting, with the le's 20-spoke titanium-tinted wheelcovers ironically being the most ambitious and eye-catching, if not the classiest.  the new roofline angles the windshield more steeply. There's a nice character line under the windows slanting slightly up to the rear deck, where there's a small spoiler lip on the se. Windows outlined in chrome, but no more, except for a thin strip at the rocker level on the le and xle. Body-colored door handles on all models.  the face of the camry se is tweaked, for the better, with body color over the black mesh grille, and more aggressive air intakes in the valance under the bumper. Headlamps are the same, angled, narrow and sleek, with a neat little notch in the line at the bottom. interiorinterior dimensions for the seventh-generation 2012 camry are within fractions of an inch of the sixth-generation (2007-11) models. There's a bit more backseat legroom, with 38. 9 inches on a flat rear floor decent for a midsize car. Some interior parts have been thinned to create more eye, knee and elbow room: a-pillars, control panels on the doors, front seatbacks, center console.  interior materials are different depending on the model, with the camry l, le and xle using a nice standard fabric, and the camry se fabric with softex synthetic leather trim. Real leather is available on the camry xle i4 and standard on the xle v6, with leather-trimmed ultrasuede available on the se and xle hybrid.  the fit of the front buckets is good on the camry le and xle, with more bolstering on the se. The camry hybrid has its own material, more like the se. The standard leather is overlapped in an arc with neat stitching, for a saddle-like effect; new passengers will compliment it and maybe run their hands over the seam. The little window for the clock up at the top looks like a hood scoop.  we found the driver's position comfortable, with thoughtful padding for the driver's right leg against the center console, and high armrests. Decent door pocket, great cubby forward in the center console, big glovebox with light door.  the instrument panel is all new for 2012. We wonder what the stripper camry l model without the 3d face looks like. Instruments are the same, only difference is in the rings around the gauges, chrome or satin.  the hybrid's panel is the same only prettier. In toyota-speak it has optitron meters with white illumination, blue metallic printing, and white lighting pointer. Another plus: relocation of the battery packs increase the trunk space in the camry hybrid to 13. 1 cubic feet (from the previous 10. 6).  trunk space on all camry models except the hybrid is a roomy 15. 4 cubic feet.  the manually operated climate control has big dials and easy buttons on the camry le. The automatic climate control on camry xle uses a 6. 1-inch lcd touch-screen also used for radio tuning, and navigation. Safely and simply they say, and we say don't believe it. It can all be bundled with navigation and satellite radio and voice recognition, and controlled on the 7-inch touch screen. That's because the camry se is tighter than the camry xle or le; and the 178-hp i4 is quick, silent and smooth, no matter that the 268-hp v6 is faster. Both the i4 and v6 are carried over, the i4 new in 2010 and v6 new for 2011.  on the camry xle, using the lighter 6-speed for the i4, we noted good ratios, smooth upshifts and invisible kickdowns around town. Wrangler has been modernized with a contemporary engine, electronics inside and underneath, and the body panels are now artfully curved for stiffness while appearing flat. The current-generation wrangler was introduced as a 2007 model.  however, the wrangler remains the most maneuverable and trail-capable vehicle from a showroom, and will go places most owners don't dare drive. The delta in wheelbase (the distance from front wheel center to rear) is similar to that between a regular cab and crew cab pickup.  a new limited-production wrangler unlimited dragon edition joins the lineup for 2014, featuring black and bronze satin-gloss exterior and interior treatments. Jeep has reissued the freedom edition as a value-priced model.  also new, the 2014 jeep wrangler rubicon x promises added off-road capability, including a winch-capable bumper and wider rock rails. A newly available trail kit features two d-rings, a tow strap, gloves, and storage bag. Parking lamps and turn-signal indicators are now clear rather than amber. Sport models may now be equipped with a uconnect touchscreen radio with hard-drive storage.  heated leather upholstery is available for wranglers. There's a choice of 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. Indeed, they will travel the interstate with a modicum of comfort and civility, but that's not what they're built for. Wranglers are better suited to all-weather urban runabouts, for folks living on a beach or off the grid or beaten path, or for those whose idea of a freeway is a fast section of dry wash or graded dirt run.  the standard soft top slides and folds horizontally on the roof, leaving the occupants further protected by door and window frames, augmented by a rollbar. The removable hardtop comes off in three pieces: a pair of t-tops, with a sunroof over the rear seat. But the rear seat can be removed, creating a voluminous 61. 2 cubic feet of cargo space. But that doesn't make much sense, either. Typically, it averages in the teens and doesn't change much between daily driving and long highway runs.  wrangler has little direct competition. The hatchback looks especially aerodynamic. It yields a 0. 295 coefficient of drag, an improvement by nearly 8 percent over the previous (pre-2012) focus.  active grille shutters block airflow to the radiator when it's not required, which improves aerodynamics and fuel mileage. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. Other cars such as the chevrolet cruze are doing this, as well.  ford calls the distinctive grille split-trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford.  sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The focus electric feels even more futuristic, with two screens that show information about driving efficiency, charge capacity and other do-dads related to the electric powertrain.  the gauges on the dashboard and instrument panel are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. However, we haven't been in a base s model, maybe it's got a more spartan interior missing the overkill trim. Ford says it's designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver. Its styling is exciting and chic, more than a match for any foreign competitors in its price class or even for competitors that cost a good deal more. Even in its most mundane models, it has an aggressive, ready-to-go demeanor.  the signature three-bar grille on the taurus wraps around to sleek, swept-back headlamp complexes. The expression on this car's face is a wry glint that says, this car knows what it's doing.  the side panels are muscular and handsomely sculpted, while the side profile shows a distant similarity to the currently fashionable audi family. The only peculiarity is the odd bullet-head of chrome on the front fender sides just ahead of the front-door cut. Isolated where it is, it's a tic that ford styling could do without.  at the rear, the car's lines feature another pair of sleek lamp complexes, tied together with a gleaming horizontal chrome strip. In the limited and sho versions, big 19-inch wheels and tires give the taurus a resolutely competitive look.  a key element of the sho formula is the subtlety of its unique exterior design cues. The sho is distinguished from other taurus models by special wheels, decklid spoiler, twin exhaust tips, unique grille work and unique parking lamp bezels. interiorinside, the new ford taurus is roomy, comfortable, and quiet. The dashboard takes an unusual form. Its upper surface is a broad, downward-curving shape that behaves almost like a sunshade over the dash's cascade of equipment and gauges. The gauges have a fresh, modern look, and all instrument lights are fully lit at all times. This is important, because so many cars dim their instruments in daylight, enough so that in high sun, the gauges and readouts are unreadable. For this bright decision, give ford an a-plus.  the taurus paddle shifters are based on the bmw paradigm, with shifters on both sides of the wheel, a pull of the forefinger granting an upshift and a push of the thumb yielding a downshift. The six-speed transmission, present in all models, works remarkably well, especially in the sho, which is spec-ed to provide still-faster gear changes than the normal taurus. However, this writer prefers the ferrari paradigm, where the paddle on one side of the wheel summons an upshift, and downshifts are summoned at the opposite side of the wheel. This is simpler and more intuitive. This full range of technologies is offered in no other family sedan within the taurus price range.  the seats are lavishly comfortable, with one exception: in order to achieve its full five-star rating in crash protection, which it successfully did, the front seat headres.
